About the Glasgow University Guardian
The Glasgow Guardian forms part of a student-newspaper tradition at the University of Glasgow stretching back to 1932. Over more than nine decades, editions have appeared under a number of titles, including the Gilmorehill Globe, Gilmorehill Guardian and Glasgow University Guardian, before becoming the publication known today as the Glasgow Guardian.
Taken together, these newspapers provide a substantial record of student life at the University. Their pages document the issues, events and conversations that mattered to students at different points in time: from University policy and local politics to societies, sport, culture, accommodation and the changing social life of the campus.
The collection offers a perspective that is distinct from official University records. It shows how students wrote about the University and the wider world in the moment, often with a mixture of reporting, commentary, humour, criticism and creativity. As a result, it does not provide a single or definitive account of student experience, but a collection of contemporary viewpoints shaped by the priorities and language of each generation.
Student communications have changed significantly since the earliest editions of the paper. News, debate and campaigning now take place across print, websites, newsletters, social media, video and other digital platforms. However, the need for accessible information, constructive challenge and opportunities for students to communicate in their own voices remains.
The Glasgow Guardian continues to be part of that wider student-media landscape at the University. Alongside other student publications and platforms, it offers a space for student journalists to report on campus, explore issues affecting their peers and contribute to the conversations taking place across the University community.
This collection provides an opportunity to explore the Guardian as a record of changing student perspectives and conversations across the history of the University. It also reflects the continuing role of student-led media in documenting campus life as it unfolds.
